The green movement and zero waste philosophies are spreading.
The world has no choice but to become more sustainable in it’s practices. Zero Emission buildings enabled by technology will become the norm and people will strive to live net zero waste lives – They will be conscious about what they consume and ensure that waste is not only reduced but recycled. This will occur not only due to environmental constraints but because costs will rise.
The capacity of conspicuous consumption to signal wealth/ status will be eroded. Instead the prestige of being able to live in safe, clean, healthy, sustainable and technologically advanced environments will take gain currency instead.
Governments will encourage this as less waste could mean greater energy security and more resources can be allocated towards other needs like healthcare and implementing technological solutions like smart nation. The Smart Nation initiative could also propel the zero zero economy and ensure a virtuous cycle.
How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?
Companies which have an emphasis on sustainability will have an edge in the future. Those already focusing on creating environmentally friendly products need to be poised for new markets. Defending their green credentials & credibility over established companies which claim to do the same will be a key differentiating factor.
Green companies are a growth sector. Employees who understand how to integrate environmental concerns into their work will be in higher demand.
