Description
Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?
Easier
Describe the change
A smart city not only needs to be business-friendly but it also needs to be a livable city. A smart nation strives to answer questions about its surroundings and is intrigued by its environment. Looking at night sky stimulates human's curiosity. Normally, about 2,500 individual stars are visible to the human eye without using any special equipment. But because of light pollution fewer than a dozen can be seen from a city like Singapore.
I envision Singapore 2030 as a city that addresses light pollution problem. This of course starts with simple solutions i.e. to shine lights down at the ground rather than up to the sky. By exploiting the pervasive use of connected devices the city develops smart lightening strategies in addition to other means of providing public safety. Today outdoor lightening is used to attract attention and to add a new dimension into architectural anesthetics. However dynamic ambient music is an alternative for Singapore 2030.
How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?
There is no doubt that the invention of artificial lights has been a positive force in advancement of humanity. But more than that we like light because of the primitive fear of danger at dark that has remained with us through the ages. Light comforts us with feeling of safety, even if the feeling is sometimes inappropriate given a situation. However similar to any other technologies, inappropriate use of artificial lightening can cause distress and suffering. Currently light pollution hinders Singaporeans of seeing stars, planets and galaxies.
Transforming the city from a city of lights to a smart city of lights and ambient music not only enables the nation to see the night sky but also it reduces energy consumption, improves the ecosystem and finally it avoids interference with certain aspects of human biology.
