Pitch

State backed fragmentation of standards, operating systems, platforms for selected emerging technologies.

Description

Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?

More difficult

Describe the change

•In the late 1970s and 80sthe videotape format wars were fought between Betamax and VHS, with VHS being the winner. •Today the  Apple IOS and Android operating systems are in competition for smart phone market shares.  •In the past, much of these technological rivalries were led by private companies competing for the consumer dollar. The outcomes of these rivalries depended on how consumer trends developed. •In the future, deliberately incompatible standards, operating systems for hardware, software & systems in selected areas could be financed and promoted by large nation states. •The objective of this could be to secure market share for domestic companies,  enhance control and security of each state over their respective systems. •For example, while US has the world's most well utilized navigation system (ie GPS), China , US and Europe are all developing their own Global Navigation Satellite Systems.

How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?

•Technical and technological choices become politicized. Singapore could find itself having to choose sides in terms of which standards, operating systems and/ or  hardware it chooses to implement when transiting to a smart nation.
