RAHS Sep 27, 2016 03:28 ![]() | Thank you for submitting your trend! A smart nation would improve citizens' abilities to crowdfund community projects. Currently, community groups have to manually conduct fundraisers to raise money and awareness for their cause. The initiative to move this online would simplify the process, and allow for greater involvement and more ground-up initiatives to occur. There may be challenges with regulating both the project and the crowdfunding. Based on the challenges you have highlighted, it may be useful to consider if this initiative would make our lives easier or more difficult. |
danliang Sep 28, 2016 04:23 ![]() | Trend contributor Ii am inclined to position this initiative as one that would make Singaporeans' lives easier, by putting myself in the perspective of a citizen, rather than the government (It would be great if we can choose select options!). Community Crowdfunding Movement could be seen as part of a great trend of citizen empowerment movements that are happening on the global platform. With the continued developments of technology, the citizens are getting used to having their demands met in a shorter period of time. For example, the connection speed of dial-up internet access was around 40-50kbs in the 1980-90s, while modern day broadband connect speed averages at 32.5Mbs (Akamai Q4 2015 global average peak connection speeds rankings). Similarly, while one may expect to receive a letter delivered by a postman in a few working days in the past, we expect others to read and reply to Whatsapp and WeChat messages within seconds. From this perspective, the government will increasingly be unable to meet citizens' demands in a timely manner. Hence, Community Crowdfunding Movement could be seen as an avenue for the government to offload some of the existing responsibilities to these ground-up movements and organizations. However, as mentioned previously, there could be undesired implications on government's role in the society. |
