Pitch

Online shopping provides the choice of shops all around the world at the convenience of your home

Description

Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?

Easier

Describe the change

In recent months, articles on E-commerce in Singapore have been filling the newspapers and social media. There is a rising trend of online shopping in Singapore that is affecting the retail sector. The draw of online shopping comes from three factors: Choice, Convenience and Price

Choice: Having the world at you feet. With few clicks, one can have the world at their feet. Browsing through many shops and various products have never been easier than it is today. Customers are not only restricted to what is sold in Singapore but can access products and services from around the world.

Convenience: Imagine walking the entire Suntec city, Marina Square and Takashimaya and not being able to find a particular dress or watch you are looking for. No imagine just browsing through the internet in the comforts of your home and actually finding what you want.

Price: With no rental cost and retail staff cost, products from online are generally cheaper than thoe from retail stores. Its a better bargain.

How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?

With the above mentioned benefits, online shopping will only keep gaining momentum. Many might believe it would lead to the decline of the retail industry but i beg to differ. I think that in 2030 if shops have shifted to E-commerce, the retail industry will actually grow instead. Moreover, the physical spaces taken up by shops at the moment could be used for more important amenities such as housing, healthcare or even schools.

Singaporeans will enjoy myraid choices, absolute convenience and lowest price guranteed for all products. Having to walk to the supermarket for grocery shopping will be a thing of the past. And again to address the declining retail industry, this trend would actually create more jobs in other sectors such as transport, logistics and IT.
