In 2021, we'll start to see a decline in quality of government leadership. Smart Nation as we know is a vague concept to the man on the street. It can include anything from light sensors, automated rice cooker, timing aircon on/off, wearables, cyber security, waste management and autonomous vehicles. Some of the high productivity SN initiatives take decades to implement with no guarantee of success. After many years of experimenting and using up lots of money, new leaders are no longer able to convince the people on the benefits of these Smart Nation Initiatives. People feel that there is very little or no ROI and believes that SN is all hyped up by the government.
How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?
Agencies nonetheless continue to force through the implemention of SN initiatives due to top down pressure. Agencies fake ROIs to leaders to justify their projects as they are only concerned about their KPIs. SN technologies get rolled out but do not solve people's problems and yet add on to cost. In order to repair damage, more $$ is poured in. We then face the situation of a mega white elephant technology looking for problems or usage. These technologies are imposed on the people making their lives more difficult. Ultimately, people just want their trains to run smoothly, roads to be free of constant uncoordinated diggings and stock exchange not breaking down.
