Pitch

The need for higher personal security online, dovetails with developments in the IoTs, allowing for better authentication.

Description

Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?

Easier

Describe the change

Identification and authentication are fundamental to our personal security. As we conduct more of our lives online, the ability to prove that we are who we say we are takes on increasing significance.

Currently we see a trend towards use of two factor identification and bio-metric markers like finger prints, iris scans to authenticate identities. However, these are not fool proof. The trend towards the  internet of things (where everyday objects have network connectivity) may also be used to bring about multi factor authentication and even allow for additional "contextual" authentication.

These two trends may eventually dovetail as bio-meteric and contextual information are all taken into account before identity is authenticated & access is granted. For example, the fact that a person’s office was unlocked by his finger print that morning, his weight and height at his desk is confirmed with recent past historical data, and iris patterns could all be factors used in authentication.

How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?

•Personal online security may be increased as it would be difficult to fraudulently create so many points of information which are used to authenticate a person’s identity. •This could allow more services and process to be conducted online. (eg. Voting).
