Pitch
Positive civic actions are sensed with smart city technology and monetarily rewarded
Description
Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?
Easier
Describe the change
Today, people are rewarded for good deeds in a number of ways:
- Volunteer work can be rewarded in local currency (Ithaca Hours)
- Exercising can pay off in cash (Singapore's National Steps Challenge)
- Using your computer to solve science problems can earn cryptocurrency (Gridcoin)
In the future, smart cities with information and communications technology (ICT) could sense positive civic actions (such as producing rooftop solar energy, conserving water or electricity, using public transportation, or eating at locally-sourced restaurants). They could keep track of actions and rewards with blockchain technology. And they could distribute rewards in the form of dollars, a local currency, or a local cryptocurrency.
How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?
The proposed trend would encourage people to take positive actions and demonstrate the benefits of Smart City technology. The reward feedback would be carefully designed to promote reflection of competence, which is a component of intrinsic motivation. A local currency or cryptocurrency would benefit the city economy by providing a Local Multiplier Effect.
