There have been several initiatives (Health Promotion Board Steps Challenge) that have been proven successful in Singapore. That said, extrinsic motivations could be a double edged sword. Could such civic initiatives be maintained with the removal of a reward system in the long term? |

The feedback of rewards for this proposal would need to be carefully designed to encourage self-reflection of competence. Rosenfield et al. (1980) found that since competence is a component of intrinsic motivation, higher rewards reflecting ability led to greater intrinsic motivation. Rosenfield, D., Folger, R., & Adelman, H. (1980).
