Make life easier/more difficult for Singapore?
Easier
Describe the change
As of Aug 2016, Singapore has joined the ranks of cities trialing driverless cars on the roads with the public trial of such taxi services.
According to Asianscientist.com, "The trial is run by Singapore-based software developer nuTonomy within Singapore’s one-north business district, where it has been conducting daily autonomous vehicle (AV) testing since April. nuTonomy is the first private company that has been approved to test AVs on public roads in Singapore."
As technology continues to improve by leaps and bounds each year, it is not difficult to imagine the roads in Singapore filled with driverless cars. Although it is now in the trial stage, by 2030 it is very possible for safe and eco-friendly self-driving cars to be a normal sight in Singapore
How will this change impact Smart Nation Singapore in 2030?
The benefits for driverless cars in Singapore would be:
1) Fewer road accidents. The majority of road accidents are caused by human error. A misjudged turn, a second of distraction or an inherent reckless driving behaviour. All these can be avoided with driverless cars because it takes away the human error in driving.
2) More time. As cars become driverless, the drivers can use extra time and attention to do other things, like read a book, chat with passengers or simple take a quick nap before the day begins. As the saying goes, "Time is Money". Imagine the amount of time saved from driving that could be transferred into something so much more useful and helpful to the individual and society.
